The Queen of the Tearling Book Review

4/5 Stars

I really enjoyed this book. It took me a little bit to get into it but in the end, I couldn't put it down. For those of you who don't know, The Queen of the Tearling follows a nineteen year old girl named Kelsea who has been in hiding since she was a baby. Her adoptive parents have been training her to become Queen of the Tearling, her kingdom which was taken over by her evil uncle, the Regent, after her mother Queen Elyssa died. The only problem is, is that not only is Kelsea nervous about ruling a kingdom, there are many people who want her dead. This book is filled with lots of action and political intrigue. I enjoyed Kelsea as a character. She was strong and logical. She thought things through before acting. This book was entertaining, fun, and a strong starting point for the rest of the series. I would definitely recommend it.

**WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD**

Okay, this book took me about 50 pages before I started to enjoy it. There was so much information being given and it was hard to keep track of everything. Once I got passed that, I really loved this book. It had a complex system that was actually rather frightening. The lottery scared me. I couldn't even imagine having to deal with that. I think Kelsea handled it as well as she could have. By burning the cages, she showed that she was a queen who would take a stand for her people; she showed that she cared.

What confused me the most was the time period that this is set in. When thinking of queens and ruling kingdoms, I tend to think in the past or in some other world all together. This world was really hard for me to grasp. They didn't have much technology, but there was also mention of America, Britain, and books such as the Harry Potter series and The Hobbit. My mind could not comprehend what type of place the book was set in and that annoyed me. I like to be able to clearly picture the setting and that was hard to do with this book.

I thought the characters were all very well done. They are all complex and interesting. I'd be interested to read more about Mace and his story. He is such a tough and stubborn character, but he also cares for Kelsea.

My favorite character was the Fetch. He was the bad boy of the story and I loved him. His interactions with Kelsea were fantastic and I loved how cunning and mysterious he was. When he showed up at the end to help stop the secret lottery, I was so excited. I can't wait for the next book to see how he comes into play, especially if Kelsea's feelings for him continue to grow.

What did you think of this book? Let me know if we had some of the same thoughts!
