All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven is now available |
When the book begins, we meet Finch, a high school senior who is standing on the ledge of his school's clock tower contemplating suicide. He soon realizes that he is not alone up there. Violet Markey, one of the most popular girls at school stands on the ledge as well, unmoving. Finch eventually coaxes her back and the two head down together. Thus begins their story.

What I loved about this book is that it eased into the romance. Finch is very odd and Violet is recovering from a terrible tragedy. They're not perfect. It is only when they start spending time together for a school project that they begin to become friends. It was very believable. The story switched between Finch's story and Violet's and how they intertwined. It unfolded in a very beautiful and natural way which I really enjoyed.
One of my favorite parts of the story was Violet and Finch's wanderings. For a school project, they are assigned to go to different places in their state and discover what is so great about them. They are allowed to pick where they want to go and write about them. Violet and Finch don't choose typical tourist destinations, they go out and explore. Their wanderings were my favorite parts of the book. I really enjoyed when they went to the book park. Violet also wrote everything down, describing details. I love traveling and it made me want to "wander"my own state and see what I discover.
This book dealt with the topic of suicide. I have never been comfortable with the thought of suicide and I don't think it is ever the answer. Finch is obsessed with suicide. Both characters are very flawed and have contemplated suicide multiple times. It was heartbreaking to hear what Violet and Finch were going through to make them want to end it all. Both perspectives were sad and I never knew what to expect when reading.
Overall, this book was heartbreaking but inspiring. It talks of tragedy and overcoming it. I would highly recommend it. It was fantastic. It left me thinking of everything that I love and where I want to wander. Hope you can pick this up and enjoy it as much as I did!
