Top Books of 2014

I know this is a little bit late but I thought that it would still be fun and interesting to share my favorite books of 2014. All of these I gave 4 or more stars to on my Goodreads account. The books that I've listed are in no particular order.

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson: I read this book over the summer and absolutely fell in love with the story. After her father dies, Amy's mother decides to move across the country from California to Connecticut. It is Amy's job to get their car across the country. The only problem is that Amy refuses to drive. Her mother enlists the help of an old family friend to drive with Amy to Connecticut. Together, Amy and Roger embark on an epic road trip and along the way learn more about each other. It is a great story that includes adventure, romance, and heartwarming moments. Along with the awesome story, the book also includes playlists, receipts, and other mementos from Amy and Roger's trip.

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan
Matson: Another Morgan Matson book. I actually read this one before I read Amy and Roger. This book was incredible. First, the cover is absolutely gorgeous. It literally screams summer. Second, the story is fantastic. Emily has a best friend named Sloane who is the complete opposite of her. Sloane is outgoing, fun, and spontaneous while Emily just goes along for the ride. One summer, Sloane disappears leaving Emily a list of tasks to complete. All of the tasks are things that Emily would never ever consider doing on her own. She figures if she completes them, Sloane will come back. This book gave me all of the feels. I loved all of the characters and I loved reading about Emily's progression as a character.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell: I read this book for the Booksplosion book of the month pick (Booksplosion is a group started by YouTubers where they pick a book to read each month and then do a live show discussion). I had read all of Rainbow Rowell's previous books and was very excited to pick up this one. Attachments focuses on a man named Lincoln who works as an internet monitor. It is his job to report anything on the work email that may seem suspicious. He soon begins getting emails from two women in the office who send emails about their personal lives. He becomes intrigued and decides not to report them. He grows to feel like he knows them through their emails and even begins to fall in love with one of them. Lincoln is an adorable, sweet, and awkward character that the reader can't help but love. Pick this one up if you want something quick and adorable.

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers: I picked up this book for one of my high school English classes. I had seen it before and thought it had sounded interesting. I began to read and immediately became enthralled in the story. Ismae is a young girl who escapes an arranged marriage and heads to the safety of the St. Mortain convent. When she arrives, she soon realizes that the nuns of the convent are assassins who worship Mortain the god of death. Ismae is trained and is placed on assignment at the high court of Brittany. Life becomes more complicated when she begins to fall for someone who is her perceived target. The story is gripping and intriguing. I couldn't put it down. This is the first book in the His Fair Assassins trilogy and it is also my favorite of the three because of the characters.

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins: Sass on sass on sass is what this book contains. Harper Price is a southern belle whose life suddenly takes a strange turn at a school dance. She becomes the Paladin for David Stark, the school reporter who, Harper swears, was born to make her life miserable. Now she is in charge of protecting the boy she can't stand. Both Harper and David are full of sass and snark which creates some hilarious moments between the two. If you want to laugh out loud, pick this up now.

Just One Day/Just One Year by Gayle Forman: My mom read this book before me and loved it. I tend to trust her opinions on books so I decided to pick it up. I was expecting a cutesy love story but that is not what I got at all. Yes this book includes romance but it was so much more than that. The main character Allyson is at the end of her three week trip to Europe when she meets Willem, a handsome Dutch actor. He invites her to spend one day with him and she accepts. The two share an amazing day but when Allyson wakes up in the morning, Willem is gone. She returns to the U.S. upset and confused. The book shows Allyson's life as she tries to move on from Willem and how she grows as a person, becoming more confident in herself. The companion novel Just One Year is the same story except it is told from Willem's point of view.

Cress by Marissa Meyer: The Lunar Chronicles just keeps getting better and better with each book. This one is a retelling of Rapunzel. Cress is a hacker who has been trapped in a satellite since she was a child. She has been watching the action from Earth about Cinder, the cyborg who crashed the Prince's ball and is now a wanted fugitive. Cress believes that she can help Cinder, only if she escapes. I'm not going to say much else because this is the third book in the series with the companion novel Fairest coming out January 27, 2015 and the final novel Winter coming out supposedly in November 2015. This series is incredible and I would highly recommend picking up Cinder, the first book in the series,  as soon as possible.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han: This was probably my favorite contemporary novel of 2014. Lara Jean has never admitted that she has loved any of her crushes before. Instead, she writes them letters, spilling her feelings all over the paper, sealing them, and putting them in a box under her bed, never to be sent. One day, she discovers that the letters have been mailed. She now has to deal with the aftermath of what she said in her letters. It is a very cute love story and the sequel P.S. I Still Love You is coming out sometime this year.

Phew! Made it through. In total, I read 36 books in 2014. The ones that I have chosen to recommend are my absolute favorites that I read this past year. I hope you enjoyed this post and pick up some of these books soon!
